Newcastle United head to the continent this week for a clash with Union SG and the Geordies have an impressive record against Belgian opposition in Europe. The Magpies have won eight out of ten matches against teams from Belgium, with their only loss being a 2-0 defeat against Anderlecht in the 1969-70 Fairs Cup (the forerunner to the UEFA Cup) quarter finals.
Eddie Howe’s side have had a fairly underwhelming start to the season, but it is safe to say the circus surrounding Alexander Isak did not help their cause in the opening weeks. They will need to put that behind them with new man Nick Woltemade scoring two goals in his first three league appearances.
In their opening match against Barcelona, they were ultimately outclassed, but Eddie Howe and his side will have had this clash with the Belgians circled as a must win game if they are to progress from the league phase.

LOSS: Newcastle 1-2 Arsenal. Sunday 28th September 2025.WON: Newcastle 4-1 Bradford City. Wednesday 24th September 2025.DRAW: Bournemouth 0-0 Newcastle. Saturday 21st September 2025.
This is Union SG’s first foray into the Champions League proper and they made the perfect start when despatching Benelux rivals PSV 3-1 two weeks ago. Having spent years in the doldrums until a buyout by Alex Muzio and Brighton owner Tony Bloom, Les Unionistes have returned to the top table of Belgian football over the last few years and are more than capable of a result on Wednesday.
The Belgian outfit have two English defenders in their squad with former Accrington Stanley stalwart Ross Sykes lining up alongside captain Christian Burgess. Moroccan international Sofiane Boufal had a fairly underwhelming few years at Southampton, while Alexis Mac Allister’s brother Kevin plays in defence for the Belgian champions. Kevin Rodriguez, Promise Akinpelu, and Raul Florucz all have four goals in the Belgian Pro League this season.

Newcastle are even money to grab their first win of their European campaign and they can be backed at 19/20 on our 2up market. Union did record a famous 2-1 home win over a heavily rotated Liverpool back in the 23/24 Europa League and they are 12/5 to win this one, with the draw priced up at 13/5.
With Newcastle losing 2-1 in their Champions League opener and Union winning 3-1, you can back both teams to score at 4/6 or over 2.5 goals at 4/5. Nick Woltemade will be the main man for Newcastle again, so look out for him in our first goalscorer and anytime goalscorer markets.

In our Supremacy football spread betting market, Newcastle have been installed as 0.35-0.55 favourites, with Total Goal Minutes available to trade at 140-150.
Our Total Goals market can be bought or sold at 2.8-3, which is towards the lower end of projections for this week’s matches. If you bought at 3 and it turned out there were five goals, you would win 2x your stake. If Newcastle secured a gritty 1-0 win on the road, the spread would settle at 1 with buyers losing 2x their stake. Three goals exactly would see buyers coming away without a win or a loss.

We have a couple of price boosts ahead of Wednesday’s action with Anthony Elanga 18/5 from 3/1 to get at least one assist. The former Forest man made a big money move to St James’ Park in the summer, but the Swedish international hasn’t scored or assisted in his eight appearances so far in black and white. It would be a timely match for the 23-year-old to start adding some attacking output to his game.
Harvey Barnes is averaging 2.13 shots per 90 minutes in the Premier League this year, and in his 63 minutes against Barcelona, the former Leicester man took three shots. He can be backed at an enhanced 15/4 from 16/5 to have two or more shots on target this week.
Both of these sides saw a goal scored in the 90th minute in their Champions League openers and we have a special football spread betting market that may well be of interest to punters. You can trade the time of the last goal in the match at 64-67, so if you bought and there was a 90th minute goal again, you would win 23x your stake. However, if the last goal of the game came in the 50th minute, you would lose 17x your stake.
